Is The Lord Among Us, ..or Not?

TEXT: EXODUS 17:5-10

5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6  Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7  And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

8  Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9  And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10  So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Massah means temptation or tempting here, and Meribah means complaining.  The very “children” God had often delivered, then tempted the Lord with their unbelief, demonstrated here with the question, (verse 7) “Is the Lord among us, or not?”  This question is the subject of the message this morning. When the Amaleks (probably the Israelites most dangerous and deceptive enemies.. for seemingly no good reason), were to fight Israel, Moses’ answering decision for Israel’s unbelief is found in verse 9. Moses instructed Joshua to choose men to fight the enemy, and then declared that that he would be at the top of the hill (in “his” place, so all would know that God is among us).  The Israelites challenged God’s presence by asking the above question, because of their unbelief, in spite of the many miracles of help God had already given them.

TEXT: MARK 2: 1-12

1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

2  And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

3  And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

4  And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

5  When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

6  But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

7  Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

8  And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

9  Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

10  But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

11  I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

12  And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

There was not enough room here for any other, so much that this sick of the palsy had to be let down from the roof. (verse 4)   This infirmed fellow had a tough situation, not having proved to have been healed from any previous methods.  And so he was pressed to the point of extreme measures.  To the point of having someone else, take for him such measures (again, verse 4) to ensure, he could be brought in the very midst of Jesus.  All, in order so that he could be ‘there.’ We also, as in his example, need to ensure that we press close enough to Jesus.  “The roof” is not close enough to be in the very midst of Christ!

What's the best way to search for a sound file?

E-mail Print PDF

At the top of the website is a search box to type in your search. You can include in your search:

  • Key words likely to be in the title or description of the sound file
  • Name of the speaker or singer
  • Date the message or Bible study was delivered (you can supply only a year like 2007 or a month like 11). Note: The data is formatted like mm-dd-yyyy (ex: 11-05-2007) but if all you know is the month you can only put 11, but you may need to include a keyword to limit the number of records returned.
  • A key scripture of the message, like: I Cor 13

In addition, while in the "Sound File Directory" if you click into one of the Sections of the Directory, you can also search from there (the search box in the middle of the page) and it will only search that Section that you are in.

How do I save a sound file to my PC?

E-mail Print PDF
When you click on the "Listen Now!" link of a particular sound file it will start playing by the MP3 player software you have on your PC. That same player will typically have in the top left corner a menu option of "File" and under that option will be a "Save As.." option to save the file onto your PC.

How do I subscribe to a Podcast?

E-mail Print PDF

If you click on one of the Podcast links, a file will be returned in a format that a "Podcast Feed Reader" recognizes. A "Podcast Feed Reader" can be a special software on a PC, or a mobile devise like the Apple iPod, or a MP3 player. Again when you click on one of the Podcast links (under "Subscribe to a Podcast") a feed file will be generated. But the most important thing to pay attention to is the URL in your browser that is shown at the top - that will look something like the following:

http://www.media.churchofgodcarmichael.org/gospel-music-podcast.feed?type=rss

The way you subscribe to the podcast is by copying that full URL into your "Podcast Feed Reader". Then when new sound files are published under that particular podcast, your "Podcast Feed Reader" will automatically pick it up for you, according to how you have configured your "Podcast Feed Reader" (and how connected it is to the Internet).

For more information on podcasting you can go to the Wikipedia article on "Podcasting".

Sound files are not playing?

E-mail Print PDF

If you have "clicked" on the link "Listen Now!" and it does not play it is more than likely a problem with how the software on your PC for playing MP3 files is configured. Typical PC software for playing MP3 files are;

- Windows Media Player

- QuickTime Player

There is also free software available for playing MP3 files if you do not already have one installed.
